 Well, there are 4 named oceans which are -

1. Pacific ocean

2. Atlantic ocean

3. Indian ocean

4. Arctic ocean

However, most of the countries including the United States now recognize the southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean of the world.

1. Pacific ocean

  • It is the largest ocean of the earth which covers more than 30% of the earth`s surface.
  • It is bigger than the total size of all the continents on earth combined.
  • The deepest point on the earth can be found on this ocean which is called the ``Mariana Trench.``
  • The Pacific ocean Basin contains 75% of the world`s volcanoes.
  • The Pacific Ocean got its name from the explorer Ferdinand Magellan. He called the ocean “mar pacific”, which meant peaceful sea.

2. Atlantic ocean
  • The name Atlantic comes from the Greek mythology which means the ``the Sea of the Atlas.``
  • It is the second largest ocean of the world and connected to all the other oceans.
  • The Bermuda triangle of which we can read many mysterious and terrifying stories lies in this. 
  • A section of the northwestern Atlantic is called the ``Iceberg Alley.``
  • The famous RMS Titanic ship also sink in this ocean.

3. Indian ocean
  • It is the 3rd largest ocean in the world which covers about 20% of the earth`s surface.
  • Due to high temperature the marine life of animals is limited.
  • The water in the Indian ocean has the lowest oxygen content in the world.
  • It has critical maritime Chokepoints, Gulfs and Bays.
  • The Indian Ocean is named after India because of the strategic location at the head of the ocean from ancient times and its long coastline in the Indian ocean rim.

4. Arctic ocean

  • It is the smallest ocean of all the five.
  • Polar bear live and hunt around this ocean.
  • The North pole which is the most northern point of the earth lies in the arctic ocean.
  • It has the coldest temperature of all the five oceans.
  • The ecosystem of the Arctic ocean is fragile and easy disrupted by climate change.

5. Antarctic ocean 

  • It is also known as the Southern ocean, South polar ocean and Austral ocean.
  • It formed about 30 millions years ago when the landmasses of Antarctica and South America split and drifted apart.
  • It surrounds the Antarctica.
  • Antarctica and the Southern ocean contains around 90% of the ice found on the earth.
  • It is the only ocean that goes around the whole globe.
